  • Stephen Hart

(he/him) Stephen Stephen grew up as a gay kid in the early 80's and believed he was educated about what HIV was. However, after testing positive for HIV in 2006 due to having his drink spiked in a club, he realized that he had much more to learn. As an actor in the West End and Off-Broadway, he was warned that he would never play a lead role while being open about his HIV status. This led to two years of shame, stigma, and dishonesty with those closest to him. Eventually, Stephen decided to take control of his life and began writing his story, "Shadowed Dreamer", which he turned into a one-man show that he performed in New York for nine months in 2009/2010. Telling his story through Shadowed Dreamer made Stephen realize how important everyone's stories are, leading him to start his own YouTube channel, Hart Talks. He continues to tell his story and provide a platform for others to share theirs as well. A year ago, he became a presenter on The HIV Hour radio show and became a positive voices speaker with THT , determined to give back by using his story to help others. Stephen's experience of feeling lonely and scared after his diagnosis has fueled his drive to use his voice to help others feel less alone. He is available to speak on topics such as HIV/AIDS awareness, stigma reduction, and mental health in the LGBTQ+ community. Stephen Hart Looking for a Guest Speake r ? • Bias

Bias A prejudice in favour of or against one thing, person, or group. Brains automatically make quick judgments and assessments. They are influenced by our background, personal experiences, societal stereotypes and cultural context. It's not just about gender, ethnicity and other visible diversity characteristics such as height, body weight, names, and many other things can also trigger unconscious bias. Unconscious bias can have a significant influence on our attitudes and behaviours, especially towards other people. It can influence key decisions in the workplace and can contribute to inequality, for example in selection and recruitment, appraisals, or promotion. Understanding unconcious bias is key to understanding the origins of discrimination and inequalities which marginalised people are victim of. < Back to Glossary

  • Empathy

Empathy The ability to understand and share the feelings of another. We often go through similar experiences, or have similar challenges. When we are going through a rough time, having someone in our corner who understands what we are going through can often be invaluable, and validates the challenges we are grappling with. Equally, receiving some form of acknowledgement from other people is important even if they haven't been through what you are going through - simply understanding something is tough can help colleagues, friends, and chosen family feel seen and supported. There are three types of empathy experts have identified: 1) Cognitive: empathy by thought only, not feelings. 2) Emotional: feeling the other person’s emotions. 3) Compassionate: feeling the other person’s pain and taking action to help.
