Intersectionality Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, Intersectionality originally applied to her studies around the compounded disadvantage Women of Colour faced during the American Civil Rights Movement. Now being used more widely as an analytical framework for understanding how aspects of a person's social and political identities compound to create different layers of discrimination and privilege. Internalised Homophobia Internalised homophobia occurs when a person is subject to society’s negative perceptions, intolerance, and stigma toward people with same-sex attraction. Consciously or unconsciously, they then turn those ideas and homophobic biases inward, believing that they are true, and experience self-hatred because of being a socially stigmatised person. < Back to Glossary

- Slur
Slur Derogatory terms used as insults towards marginalised groups of people. Many slurs have been commonly used in the past but are now seen as socially unacceptable. Communities sometimes "reclaim" slurs by adopting them into their vocabulary and changing their meaning e.g. "Queer" was a popular slur in the past but is now a well-established term for people whose identities fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. < Back to Glossary
