- Homophobia
Homophobia The fear, hatred, discomfort with, or mistrust of people who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual. People can also outwardly manifest homophobia towards other people as a result of cultural, social and religious views, or even as a result of internalised shame. Homophobia is the most common form (or well-known) form of harassment and discrimination that people in the LGBTQIA+ community experience. < Back to Glossary
- Unconscious (bias)
Unconscious (bias) Unconscious biases are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside their own conscious awareness. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one's tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing. Recognising and addressing unconscious biases is a key goal of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives as they stand in the way of ensuring everyone has equal access to opportunities. < Back to Glossary
- GRC
GRC The Gender Recognition Act 2004 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that allows people who have gender dysphoria to change their legal gender. It came into effect on 4 April 2005. A Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) is needed for trans people to change their birth certificate and their sex marker with HMRC. Trans people also need a Gender Recognition Certificate if they want their marriage or civil partnership certificate to reflect their true identity. Only a small percentage of the transgender population in the UK have GRCs on account of the process to get one being laborious, medicalised and intrusive. < Back to Glossary
- Consent
Consent Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something. Within relationships, consent is vitally important when we consider physical intimacy and identity disclosure. This is something we should all campaign for, both within the Queer Community, but also wider society as a whole. It is also imperative that when someone shares personal information with us, that we only share this further with others after gaining consent (e.g. if someone discloses that they have a disability). < Back to Glossary

- Hierarchy
Hierarchy Hierarchy is a system in which people or things are placed in a series of levels with different importance, status, or influence. It is most often reflected in corporate organisations and establishmentarian government structures. The higher up a hierarchy structure we are, the more power, influence and privilege we usually hold. Recognising hierarchy (and by extension privilege) is the first step to dismantling systems of inequality, encouraging inclusion and positive change. Minority Stress Minority stress describes high levels of stress faced by members of stigmatised minority or marginalised groups. - Rahim EL Habachi
(he/him) Rahim Rahim is a Moroccan gay Refugee living in Wales, who is a playwright, actor, and belly dancer. Upon discovering that he was living with HIV, he became an advocate for eradicating the stigma surrounding HIV. Rahim is passionate about creating safe spaces for the LGBT global majority, as well as for asylum seekers and refugees. He believes in the importance of intersectionality, recognizing the ways in which different forms of oppression intersect to create unique challenges. In addition to his work on HIV and seeking asylum, Rahim is also an activist for sexual health and identity. He believes in the power of storytelling and using his own experiences to create change. Puberty Blockers Puberty blockers, otherwise known as puberty inhibitors, hormones blockers or gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogues, are a type of drug that can be used to stall the onset of puberty in adolescents by blocking hormones like testosterone and estrogen. Puberty blockers are used to treat precocious puberty and to delay the onset of puberty in transgender children, allowing them more time to explore their gender identity without developing unwanted sex characteristics.
